Monster mako reeled in
It took 2 hours to bring in the 740-pound shark
DESTIN, FL — When the bait goes in the water, you never know what’s going to bite. Sunday evening, it was a mako shark. A big one.
The crew aboard the Sunrise with Capt. Kelly Windes landed a 740-pound mako Sunday evening while swordfishing about 65 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. The catch was the largest in two years on the Destin docks, but it was about 100 pounds shy of the Destin Fishing Rodeo recordbreaking mako caught back in 2007. Windes said the shark took the bait, a Boston mackerel, just after dark Sunday.
“He jumped all over the place,” Windes said. The angler on the rod was Destin’s Tony Besecker. Windes said it took him about an hour and 40 minutes to get the shark, which measured 118 inches from its head to the fork of its tail, to the boat. The angler almost got “spooled” as the shark took out hundreds of yards of line. “It was a good fight,” Besecker said, as the shark hung on the docks Monday morning at Fishing Fleet Marina.
