Arthur charged with DUI manslaughter (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Daily News

FORT WALTON BEACH — The man charged in the fatal wreck that killed teenager Alayna Bowman now also faces a DUI manslaughter charge.

John Campbell Arthur had the new charge added Wednesday morning after the state attorney’s office received his blood-alcohol content and saw it was above the legal limit of .08, said Assistant State Attorney Angela Mason, who is prosecuting the case.

His exact blood-alcohol level has not been released but will become a public record during discovery in the case, she said.

Arthur, 22, was initially charged the day after the crash with driving while his license was suspended in an accident involving death and violation of probation.

Complete coverage

The charges against Arthur stem from a June 23 crash on a residential street in Fort Walton Beach. Bowman, 16, was turning into her driveway around 10 p.m. when her vehicle was struck by Arthur’s.

She died at the scene, and her passenger — her younger brother, Mack — was injured.

Remembering Alayna

At a pretrial detention hearing Wednesday, Judge John T. Brown told Arthur he would remain in jail until after the trial was over.

Okaloosa County Chief Assistant State Attorney Bill Bishop said the state attorney’s office will arraign Arthur in the next two to three weeks on all the charges.

During that same period, evidence and documentation from the crash, including his blood-alcohol level, will be presented. A trial date has not yet been set.

Arthur faces a maximum of 15 years for the DUI manslaughter charge, five years for driving with a suspended license in an accident involving death, and five years for violating his probation.

Mason said the state intends to seek the maximum 25 years of incarceration.
