Concert goes beyond traditional barbershop style

February 25, 2010 - 8:19 AM

FORT WALTON BEACH — If “My Wild Irish Rose” is your idea of what barbershop a cappella singing is about, you’re right … and you’re wrong.

“We’re going to be doing some doo-wop, some ’50s and some really upbeat stuff,” said Alan Stearns, public relations director for the Emerald Coast Chorus. “We want people to hear everything we can do in addition to the traditional songs.”

The Emerald Coast Chorus will present “The Magic of Harmony” at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Emerald Coast Conference Center on Okaloosa Island.

Tickets are $15 in advance at Bayou Books in Niceville, Connect with Flowers in Shalimar, P.S. Gifts in Fort Walton Beach, Friendly Florist in Crestview, Cat Clinic in Destin and online at EmeraldCoastChorus.com

Tickets will be $17 at the door. Call 850-398-6215.

Stearns said the concert would last about two hours and be divided into three parts with “small intermissions between each segment primarily to move people on and off the stage.”

The chorus itself will sing in the first part of the concert. The Emerald Coast Chorus boasts about 40 gentlemen “ranging from ages 14 on up,” Stearns said.

“We really have some youth in here now,” he said. “We’ve been recruiting a lot.”

Stearns said some high schoolers were invited to the annual barbershop training session held at Camp Timpoochee in Niceville “and that sort of got the juices flowing with the young people.”

During the second part of the concert, the spotlight will be on several guest groups from area schools.

“Each school will sing a couple of songs,” Stearns said.

The Camerata Chorus consists of 60 young men from Niceville High School.

“Niceville has a huge music program,” Stearns said. “Their director, Michael Dye, has opened this open for guys to do something different that they normally might not do.

“We help by providing a little coaching and some music, which is very expensive.”

Chanticleer Chorus from Crestview High School is a mixed group of young men and women.

Also a mixed group, and the largest, is the Chamber Choir from Rocky Bayou Christian School.

Southern Comfort, a quartet from the Emerald Coast Chorus, also will sing during the second section, which will close with the full chorus joining all of the guest groups on stage for a patriotic number.

“I call it a mass chorus,” Stearns said. “Could be as many as 150 people singing.”

The third and final part of the show will be devoted to a performance by champion Florida quartet On Demand.

“They will bring a lot of comedy to the show as well as music,” Stearns said. “They are international quality with very, very precise timing.”

The Emerald Coast Chorus rehearses at 7 p.m. every Thursday at Shalimar United Methodist Church, 1 Old Ferry Road.

Men who like to sing are welcome to come to any rehearsal. The group is holding a Guest Night on March 11. Call 582-5263 or 396-9409.
