Liar's Club Cafe breakfast worth waking up for
I’m not much of a breakfast person, mostly because I’m not usually awake during the early morning hours. I’ll admit, I groaned a little inside when I learned I’d be reviewing a breakfast establishment about an hour from where I live, which meant I’d have to be awake a lot earlier than normal.
I’d never heard of the Liar’s Club Café, the breakfast offshoot of Stinky’s Fish Camp in Dune Allen Beach, but there it was, a little wing off the Bait Shack.
The food
After the drive, my breakfast date and I were famished. I was hoping for something hearty, and something with seafood in it. I figured I’d get my wish after learning Liar’s Club was connected to Stinky’s.
I’d read online that Liar’s Club made a good beignet. Having been to New Orleans several times, and always stopping into Café du Monde for beignets, I had to compare.
For our entrees, my friend, Carol, chose the fresh blue crab and cream cheese omelet, while I couldn’t resist the creamy crawfish etouffee and grits.
Our beignets arrived first. There were three triangular-shaped pastries in a white paper bag. Though very delicious, they were denser than Café du Monde beignets.
When our main courses arrived, Carol and I both were pleased by what we saw. Her omelet was jam-packed with cream cheese and blue crab, while my etouffee and grits were beautifully separated in an oversized bowl.
The etouffee was perfectly spiced, and the grits were by far the best I’ve had in my entire life. Creamy and smooth with a hint of cheese, they had to have been prepared on-the-spot. Paired with the etouffee, they were perfect as I at first took separate bites of the etouffee and grits then swirled them together.
My bite of Carol’s omelet was equally as good with warm cream cheese and definite chunks of crab.
Other offerings on the menu include French toast, an assortment of biscuits, Liar’s Club Benedict, shrimp and grits and beef grillades and grits.
The atmosphere
I dined at Liar’s Club Café during what seemed like the calm before the storm on Friday morning. While the restaurant was doing steady business, everything was casual and laid back. Dining near us were a father and his three very well-behaved children, and a couple.
At first we were seated near the air conditioner, which was too loud for Carol. We asked to be moved across the dining room near the window where we had a view of Lake Allen.
The service
Our waitress was attentive, refilling our drinks promptly. After we ordered, she commented that we both had made excellent choices. She wasn’t lying.
A final taste
Liar’s Club will definitely give you a good start to your day. Though I’m afraid after you leave you’ll wonder how you’ll top your last meal.
