Man dies in single car crash (video)

A Gastonia man died Tuesday afternoon after crashing his car into a utility pole.

Paul Glenn Phillips, 71, of Gastonia, drove his 1993 Honda Accord off the right side of Union Road near the intersection of Hudson Boulevard about 7:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Mike Lari with Gastonia Police.

A medical issue most likely caused Phillips to drift off of the road and strike the utility pole, a sign and a tree near Burger King, said Lari.

Lari said he didn’t feel qualified to pinpoint what the medical issue was that the man had but believed it is what resulted in his death rather than injuries caused by the crash. Phillips was taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital and underwent surgery but ultimately died.

The crash knocked out power to half of the traffic lights at the intersection, and police directed traffic for a couple of hours while repairs were made, said Lari.
