Police shoot man during attempted burglary
Gaston County Police shot a man early Sunday morning during an attempted burglary into the home of his estranged wife, according to a police report.
Police officers confronted a man around 3 a.m. Sunday after receiving a call of a burglary in progress at 215 Horseshoe Lake Road, north of Mount Holly. The woman inside reported that her husband was trying to break into the home and that he had a gun.
Officers heard a gunshot as they approached the home and saw a man trying to enter it through a window, according to a Gaston County Police report. The man tried to grab a nearby gun and one of the approaching officers shot him in the hip, according to the police report.
Corey Scott Hart, 48, whose address is listed as 215 Horseshoe Lake Road, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he was treated and released into police custody.
Hart was booked into Gaston County Jail on three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, domestic assault and discharging a weapon within 500 feet of a residence.
Hart was not given a bond.
Officer J.P. Brienza was placed on administrative leave with pay pending an investigation into the shooting, which is standard operating procedure. The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident, according to Gaston County Police.
