Divine holdout? The case against Tebow — in brief

Double Take

 Matt’s Take:

I guess Tim Tebow, A.K.A Baby Jesus, is trying to be like Mike. I just hope he decides to show the same class as Mike did and never be seen in his underpants.

For all the years that Michael Jordan has been a spokesperson for Hanes, not once has he flaunted his nether regions in one of their ads. As much as I hate listening to MJ trying to hock us his briefs and T’s along with running mates Charlie Sheen and Kevin Bacon — we applaud him for always being clothed.

But now that Tebow has signed on to be the spokesperson for Jockey Underwear, might I add before he has even signed his rookie contract to play football with the Denver Broncos, we must all hope and pray that he doesn’t decide to go all David Beckham on us and plaster his underwear sporting self all over billboards.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for athletes lending themselves to product promotion, but the thought of seeing Tebow in his preferred “tighty-whities” just doesn’t sit well with me. It does make me wonder though, will Tebow demand that he is allowed to sport a black patch with one of his favorite Bible verses on them, like his eye black?

I also have to wonder what made Mr. Tebow change his mind, after saying in May that he had turned down “seven-figure endorsement deals” because he thought they would “distract” him from football. So, now that training camp is about to be in full swing, I sure hope that Timmy is not distracted from his underwear modeling by actually playing football.

I’m glad that I am not a Broncos fan, because the thought of Tebow in his undies would “distract” me from purchasing tickets.

Andrew’s take:

I thought Gainesville’s savior didn’t care about the money.

I remember that Timmy wasn’t even sure if the NFL was the most appropriate choice for a career. He was throwing around things like ministry and international volunteering.

I’m sure at some point he’ll devote his time to both of these jobs, but who was Tim Tebow fooling? He was always going to do this.

Turns out, Shanghaiing the Denver Broncos out of more dough than his due was his true calling.

Before shysters such as Michael Crabtree had owners by the neck, NFL rookies were compensated in descending value according to how far they fell down the draft board. But Tebow is asking for more than the guy who went before, Dez Bryant.

Tebow is still far away from Crabtree prima donna status, but then Michael hasn’t embraced the part of role model.

Just be careful Tim. You’re not in the Deep South anymore. Those mile highers have a clearer view of the bottom of the Kool-Aid jug.

For the time being, I guess everyone’s happy. Tebow is going to get more money than he deserves, and the Broncos are selling a swamp load of jerseys for the third best quarterback on their team.

But this was all going to happen, and fans need to realize how predictable this guy is.

Last year’s SEC championship provided the perfect example. I distinctly remember my friend saying, “Win or lose, Tim Tebow will cry at the end of this game.”

Calling someone “predictable” is another way of saying, “flat, bland, boring or one-dimensional.”

I would rather the leader of a football team be dynamic and compelling.
