Working the ball inside and getting that second and third shot, the Lewis Falcons beat the Destin Marlin girls 37-9 in the first round of the Okaloosa County Middle School Basketball Tournament in Valparaiso Monday night.
Lewis took the early lead with Brenda Gulley, Alexes Bryant and Ashley Lane scoring. Destin finally broke onto the board with a put-back basket from Tarra LaSalle with a minute to go. Lewis finished up with a free throw from Nakia McKinnie.
To start the second, Gulley went to the line and hit the second of two tries, then Bryant worked her way inside for two points. Seconds later, Bryant was inside again for two points. With 4 minutes to go in the first half, Kennedi Laughlin scored on an outside shot for Destin. The Falcons came soaring back with a bucket from Gulley, Lane and Bryant.
Destin scored its last point of the first half on a free throw from LaSalle. Lewis finished up with two free throws and a put-back from Bryant. Lewis led 22-5 at the break.
In the third quarter, Lewis came out driving the ball inside with Bryant, Lane and Gulley scoring for a 28-5 advantage.
When the final buzzer sounded, Lewis walked off the court with a 37-9 victory.
The Marlins finished the season, including the tournament, with a 4-6 record.
