The excitement for the start of the upcoming football season is at a fever pitch with fans getting ready for the season openers of their favorite high school, college and professional teams. And, with the kickoff of the new football season, the first “Faith & Football Day” will kickoff the “faith season,” according to event organizers.
The first “Faith & Football Day” has been scheduled for Aug. 24, at the Palms of Destin Resort and will feature inspirational Christian speakers who will challenge attendees to get as excited about their faith as they are about their favorite teams.
The event is being organized and conducted by Gameday Media, a Destin-based company that specializes in hosting sporting events in the area, including coaches’ clinics, high school basketball tournaments and team camps, sports trade shows, golf and tennis tournaments and more.
“My wife and I are members of Destiny Worship Center in Destin, and recently I just felt the Lord speaking to my heart to put something like this together,” said Gameday Media president and local sports talk radio host Scott McKinney. “Normally, we plan our other events with at least a year’s notice, but this one was coming up so quick with the start of the football season. I just said, ‘Lord, if you want this to happen, then I know you can make it happen,’ and He has. The response has been amazing!”
The 2013 “Faith & Football Day” will kickoff at 9 a.m. at the Palms, which is on U.S. 98 in Destin, and will feature former players, coaches, sports writers and more. The event is free, but attendees must have a ticket to get into the conference.
“We have room for about 600 people and we have already had requests for over 300 seats,” McKinney said. “I know that we will get a full house and it’s going to be such an awesome day. God is really going to bless everyone who attends.”
Among the guest speakers are former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Chad Goss; sports reporter Chad Gibbs, who is an Auburn graduate and has written several Christian books; former sports writer Randy Winton, the current youth pastor at First Baptist Church in Brewton, Ala.; Dr. Fletcher Law, highly-sought after evangelist and Christian author and Ole Miss alumni; Wayne Asprodites, student pastor, Destiny Worship Center and LSU fan; and McKinney, who is the host of the college football sports talk radio show “Southern Sports Tonight” heard locally on 100.3 FM The Ticket.
The event is open to everyone — men, women and children — and should end early afternoon the same day. The event is non-denominational and attendees are encouraged to wear the jersey of their favorite team or other team gear.
“Everyone gets pumped about the start of the football season, and we all go a little crazy as fans,” McKinney said. “It just is a perfect time to also get ourselves pumped up about our faith and what we stand for and believe in.
“This is something we plan on doing each year around the start of the football season, and we are praying for God’s will for this event.”
Speakers will have copies of their books for sale at the event, and there will also be music and food.
