A large flock of birds was spotted on Okaloosa Island last weekend — nearly 700 sock-wearing birds could be seen hopping up and down the beaches on the night of Sunday, Feb. 24.

Trading in their everyday garb for poodle skirts, jeans and long white tube socks, snowbirds once again channeled the Greasers of the 1950's for the third annual snowbird appreciation sock hop held at the Emerald Coast Convention Center.

According to Sherry Rushing, Sales Director with the Emerald Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc., when the doors to the sock hop were opened "guests started rushing in."

The Emerald Coast Gold Band and Ron Adams as Elvis Presley provided authentic 1950's live music.

Allowing the snowbirds a chance to show off their skills on the dance floor, the night featured a dance contest. The sock hop also featured a costume contest for those who had come dressed in their 1950's best.

Cardboard cutouts of icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley were available to sock hop guests who wanted to have their picture taken with 1950's favorites. Also available for pictures was a light blue classic 1957 Chevrolet.

Bonnie and David Hendrickson, first-time snowbirds from Wisconsin, said they were having a great time and they would definitely be coming again next year.
